I began this project about a year ago while taking an elective course at the Savannah College of Art and Design called the Human Altered Landscape. This Fall while taking a Project Seminar class I decided to continue documenting these structures. To see the full project here is a link to my website.
The intrusion of highways over savannah isn’t prominent. It can only really be seen from certain areas within the city. When I first found myself under one of them I felt the need to engage with them and document the immensity that they are. Peering upwards the structures slicing through land engaged me emotionally. Aesthetically the roadways fly through the sky and smash through land to only find itself flying again. The motion that the highways create is alluring and pulled me in visually. I photographed the highways at night to create a dramatic relationship between my subject matter and the light falling upon them.
The images were created under a night sky, photographed on black and white film with the use of long exposures. The quality of light was very important as I wanted the viewer to see these scenes as I saw them on late nights and very little human interruption.
